When Is the Best Time to Build Your Garden?

Building in a garden’s off season

🌿 When Is the Best Time to Build Your Garden?

We don’t fly south with the geese for the winter — though, admittedly, it would be rather nice. Instead, our landscaping builds continue throughout the colder months, because the truth is:

👉 The best time to build your garden is autumn, winter, and spring.

Why? Because by starting your project in the off-season, your garden will be finished and flourishing by the time the warm weather arrives in April — giving you a full summer of enjoyment rather than a late start.

In my experience, the most convenient time to build a garden is during the Autumn, Winter and Spring - it is a time when you don’t want to use your garden and they are ready for when the sun comes out in April.

❄️ Can You Really Build Gardens in Winter?

Yes. While the weather can create some challenges, it rarely stops progress completely. In fact, some of the most transformative builds we’ve delivered have been constructed in the crisp, bright days of winter.

Here’s what we consider:

  • Concrete and cement work — Only carried out when temperatures are 3°C and rising, so freezing days may mean a short pause on patios, terraces, or retaining walls.

  • Heavy rain — Can briefly delay paving, turfing, and planting, but construction usually resumes within days.

  • Snow and ice — For safety, we don’t work in snowy conditions to avoid slips or hidden hazards, but these days are few and far between.

The reality? These weather interruptions are usually short-lived, and our teams continue with other parts of the build in the meantime.

💡 Common Questions from Clients

“Won’t delays increase the cost of my build?”
No. We quote your project as a fixed price. Weather-related pauses do not add to your cost — they just shift the timeline slightly, if at all.

“But doesn’t it get dark early in winter?”
We work from 7:30am to 4:00pm. These daylight hours are more than sufficient for construction, and our teams are efficient at maximising every day.

“Is my garden at risk of damage from a winter build?”
Not at all. In fact, winter is an ideal time for structural work because the ground is often firmer, and your planting will be scheduled at the correct season for establishment.

🌱 Why Building Early Makes Sense

  • Ready for Summer: A spring-ready garden means BBQs, outdoor dining, and children’s play from the very first sunny days.

  • Planting Success: Autumn and spring are excellent planting seasons — giving shrubs, perennials, and trees time to establish before heatwaves.

  • Scheduling Advantage: Booking a build outside peak summer demand often means shorter lead times and more flexibility.

We naturally get a lot of enquiries for garden transformations when the sun comes out in April. With typical build lead times being 3 months, it can lead to disappointment getting your new garden for the summer.
